Finding the Cheapest Gas

Gas prices are outrageous (the national average at the time of this posting is $3.075) and everyone is on the hunt for the gas stations offering the cheapest prices. We all know the feeling of filling gas at $3.19 and then finding out another station a mile away was beating that price by 16 cents!

Gasbuddy.com offers a fun way to find the cheapest gas prices in your area. You can select your state and find your local city or just enter your zip code. If you have some extra time, and drive around with a notepad in your car, you can even earn some extra cash for being observant!

How it works:
1. Note down gas prices as you are driving around,
2. Create an account on gasbuddy.com and report your price data,
3. You earn points for the different prices you report which can be used to win prizes.

The site also offers some additional features for geeks like me.

You can identify price trends in any area in the USA using data from the last month to the last 6 years.

There are also color coded maps of the USA showing which counties are offering gas in certain price ranges. Areas are color coded according to their price for the average price of regular unleaded gasoline.

A great comparison chart shows gasoline tax information in each state.

You can even getting an estimate cost for road trips:
1. Enter points of travel,
2. Enter information on your vehicle to calculate fuel economy,
3. The website will tell you where the cheapest gas stations are along your trip route!

If you are still searching for cheaper alternatives, try riding a bike or walking part of your commute! Keep a set of clothes in your office and take advantage of any showers your company or nearby gyms/YMCAs offer. Walking or riding may or may not be possible depending on the snow outside and the temperatures, but even if you decide to walk to the pharmacy or grocery store to get a couple items, that is still saving you some money in gas and giving yourself some outdoor exercise as well.
